Annual In Memory of Bobby Preston and Denny Allen Blood Drive
Thursday, July 11th at the Olympic Center from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Lake Placid, NY (June 4, 2024) — The community will be celebrating the lives of two Lake
Placid natives, Bobby Preston and Denny Allen with an annual lifesaving blood drive on
Thursday, July 11th. Both were cherished members of the community.
In 1997, Bobby Preston lost his life at the age of 36, following a tragic accident. Nearly 200
units of blood were used, as doctors worked hard to save Bobby’s life. He worked as Director of
Operations for the Olympic Center and formed a strong friendship with Denny Allen.
During the 1980 Winter Olympics, Denny Allen was the manager of the Olympic Speedskating
Oval. By 1981, he was at the Olympic Center working for the North Elba Park District and then
ORDA in 1982, first as the director of operations, then director of events and finally general
manager. He retired in 2018 after more than 37 years of service. Denny passed away
unexpectedly at the age of 64 in 2019.
The community is invited to become a hometown hero and answer the call of patients in need
by donating blood in memory of Bobby Preston and Denny Allen on Thursday, July 11 from 1:00
pm to 6:00 pm at the Olympic Center, Lake Placid, NY in the Empire Room.
Summer presents a particular challenge due to vacations, schools being out of session, and
activities keeping everyone busy — making it a tough time to keep a sufficient blood supply.
When blood donations go out the door faster than we can collect them, a shortage may happen
and delay essential medical care.
The Red Cross asks those who feel healthy to make it a summer full of life by donating blood. In
thanks for helping meet patient needs at a challenging time of year, donors will receive a Red
Cross umbrella.
How to donate blood
